Your Skyhawk Sport Review No. 2 — Good Morning Martin

TRACK AND FIELD

This past week has been an eventful one for the men’s track team, as the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championship was held from February 20-21. The indoor championship races were hosted at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama. The University of Tennessee at Martin Men’s Tack team had an exceptional performance, walking away with four event titles: men’s distance relay, men’s 60-hurdles, men’s 60-meter, and the men’s 200-meter dash. These young athletes did an exceptional job this week and gained nothing but respect from their fellow athletes, coaches, and community.

The men’s distance medley relay (DMR) team, of Tyreke Sapp, Oisin O’Gailin, Leonel Perez, and Jonathan Conley, crushed their event by winning the title. They also had the fourth fastest time, in OVC history, at a 10:01.48 time.

Sapp had a phenomenal individual turnout, at the championship, receiving multiple accolades after competing. Sapp destroyed the 60-meter dash program record, for the third straight week in a row, and finished at an outstanding 6.85 seconds.

Along with Sapp, is another standout, Brady Fry, who won the men’s 60-meter hurdles event, beating his closest opponent by 0.001 second!

Having only started back up the track & field program a few years ago, these impressive athletes are showing what they are made of by putting Martin on the “athletic map, in track & field! Martin is all about growth and building connections! What better way than building up and excelling in one of UT Martin’s athletic programs.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Yesterday, the UT Martin Skyhawk’s Women’s Tennis Team squared off against the No. 29 ranked Tennessee Lady Vols. The team was aware of the challenge that they were up against and competed with all that they had, but despite their best efforts, suffered a 7-0 loss.

The dynamic duo of Mizuki Sakuri and Daphne Pratt were extremely close to winning a doubles, against the nationally ranked Lady Vols, but were unable to hold them back from securing the match point, after being tied up at 3 points.

Andrea Plantada and Amelia Campbell faced a heartbreaking misfortune, after falling 6-0, to the duo of Ariadna Riley and Rebeka Mertena, at the No. 3 court. Defeated by the No. 9 Tennessee set of Sadie Hammond and Kaitlin Staines, Jemima Potter and Asel Jumamukhambetova went for the jugular but couldn’t hold the Lady Vols from obtaining a 6-1 victory and winning a point for doubles.

Lastly, Sakurai and Jule Serif were able to pull out being No. 5 and No. 6 in the singles division. This competition was clearly a challenging one, especially since our Skyhwaks had to take on a powerhouse, like the University of Tennessee Knoxville! Even though our team did not come out number one overall, Martin and the university are more than proud of the effort, skill, and professionalism that was shown by our Skyhawks!
